What happens when my agents send more spans than my Rius plan includes?
Rius keeps accepting spans past your plan’s monthly allowance and bills the extra at your plan’s overage rate on the next monthly invoice. Overage is prorated per span, not rounded up to a whole million. You can see the month’s spans against your allowance under Plan & usage in the console. Details on plans are in Plans and billing.
How it works
Each plan includes a number of spans per month. Spans beyond that number are not refused. They are billed at the plan’s overage rate and appear on the next monthly invoice.
| Plan | Price | Spans included per month | Overage per 1M spans |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core | $19 / month | 500,000 | $14 |
| Growth | $79 / month | 2,500,000 | $12 |
| Pro | $199 / month | 10,000,000 | $10 |
Prices are in US dollars, billed monthly, before tax.
Because overage is prorated per span, you pay only for the spans you send. On Core, 600,000 spans in a month is 100,000 over the allowance, which is one tenth of a million, so the overage is $1.40 before tax.
If you change plan mid-month, the spans before the change are billed at the old plan’s rate and the spans after it at the new plan’s rate.
Two other limits are separate from overage:
- Ingest rate. Each workspace has a rate limit: 25,000 spans per minute on Core, 50,000 on Growth and 100,000 on Pro. Above it, ingest refuses the whole request with HTTP 429 and a
Retry-Afterheader of up to 60 seconds. None of that request’s spans are stored unless the exporter sends it again. - The trial. A new organization starts on a trial that lasts 30 days or 500,000 spans, whichever comes first, with no card. When it ends, ingest is refused with HTTP 402 and the spans sent are dropped, not buffered, until you subscribe. Stored data stays readable.
Set it up
- Open Settings → Plan & usage in the console. Only organization admins manage billing. Members see “Only organization admins can manage billing.”
- Read the meter that compares this month’s spans with your plan’s allowance. This is where you see how many spans you send. During the trial the page also shows the date the trial ends and a meter for each limit.
- If you are close to the allowance and want to send fewer spans, lower the share of root traces your SDK sends with
RIUS_SAMPLE_RATE. It defaults to 1.0, which sends every root trace.
export RIUS_SAMPLE_RATE=0.5- If you send more than your plan includes most months, click Change plan and pick another plan. Review the quote, then click Confirm change. An upgrade applies right away. You are charged the prorated difference for the rest of the period, and the renewal date does not move. A downgrade is scheduled for the end of the current period, and until then your current plan and limits apply.
- For larger volumes, write to help@glassflow.ai to arrange an Enterprise plan.

What you get
- No dropped spans at the allowance. Traces keep flowing when you pass your plan’s span count, so you do not lose the runs you most want to inspect.
- A predictable rate. Overage is a fixed price per million spans for your plan, prorated per span.
- A running count. Plan & usage shows the month’s spans against the allowance, so you can decide on a plan change before the invoice arrives.
- Invoices you can check. Overage appears on the next monthly invoice. In the Stripe customer portal, which Manage billing opens, you can see and download every invoice, and Stripe also emails each one.
- Fair billing across a plan change. The old plan’s rate applies to spans before the change and the new plan’s rate to spans after it.
When something else fits
- If you pass your allowance every month, compare the overage rate with a bigger plan. Overage per million spans drops from $14 on Core to $12 on Growth and $10 on Pro, and a higher plan also raises the per-workspace ingest rate.
- If you see HTTP 429 responses, the cause is the per-workspace ingest rate, not the monthly allowance, so a higher plan or a lower send rate fits better than waiting for the next month.
- For larger volumes, an Enterprise plan is arranged through help@glassflow.ai. Pro does not stop at 10,000,000 spans: spans beyond it are billed at $10 per million.
